Reporting on Endemic Problems using Solutions Journalism
Free
Introduction
This Solutions Journalism course equips journalists and editors with the skills to report rigorously on responses to maternal health challenges in Africa. Focusing on evidence-based storytelling, the course contrasts traditional problem-focused reporting with SoJo’s emphasis on analysing the effectiveness and limitations of solutions.
Through theory, case studies, and practical exercises, participants learn to identify credible interventions, assess their impact using data, and craft compelling, balanced stories. The course also builds skills in sourcing data, evaluating responses, and pitching strong, solutions-focused narratives.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Understand the principles of Solutions Journalism (SoJo) and how it differs from traditional reporting.
- Identify and evaluate credible solutions to social problems using data and real-world examples.
- Use databases, archives, and reporting tools to support evidence-based journalism.
- Craft and pitch strong SoJo stories tailored to the right audience and publication.
Target Audience
This course is tailored for journalists who have a minimum of two years of reporting experience, whether they are employed in a newsroom or working freelance.
